Many Golf I car enthusiasts have installed the16V engines from the Golf II and III into the Golf I. One problem that you will find is you will need a header that fits the Golf I chassis. We have developed a perfect fitting header for the 16V engine in the Golf I chassis. This mandrel bent header fits perfectly onto the cylinder head. Mandrel bent means the tubing is laid inside the metal mold before it is shaped to its size. With mandrel bending there is hardly any distortion. Normally, when a tube is bent, it becomes smaller in the bent area. With mandrel bending the inner tube dimension stays the same to get maximum flow and therefore more horsepower and torque. With this engine change and our racing exhaust header you can expect to get 14 to 16 more horsepower than the standard 16V Golf I engine. You will also experience quicker throttle response at any RPM and an increase in torque between 4 and 6 thousand RPM. Fitting our headers to the engine is no problem but may require some fabrication from the header and flange to your present exhaust system. We guarantee you will be delighted with the sound and fitment of this racing header.
Recommended Maintenance:
We recommend retightening the nuts that hold the header to the cylinder head 1 week after installation. Header studs and nuts are not included.
It is best to clean the headers with 00 size steel wool on a monthly basis. This steel wool is available from any hardware store.
